The MEWP Training Program
According to IPAF, the MEW Training Program instructs an operator to prepare and safely operate various types of MEWPs, also called as cherry pickers, aerial lifts or scissor lifts. Categories include :
- Static Vertical (1a),
- Static Boom (1b),
- Mobile Vertical (3a),
- Mobile Boom (3b),
- Specialist Machines (SPECIAL),
- Push Around Vehicle (PAV),
- Insulated Aerial Device (IAD).
What distinguish these modules
When considering training for different types of Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs), the IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) courses 1a, 1b, 3a, and 3b each focus on specific types of equipment, ensuring that you are equipped with the right skills for the platform you'll operate:
1a course
This course is tailored for static vertical platforms, also known as personnel lifts or vertical mast lifts. These platforms are ideal for indoor or confined-space work. They provide vertical lift capability but are not designed to be driven when elevated. If your work involves such environments, this course is suitable for you.
1b course
If you need to operate static boom lifts, such as truck-mounted platforms or trailer-mounted booms, this course is designed for you. These are typically used for outdoor work and can extend in multiple directions, but they are not intended to be moved while elevated.
3a course
This course focuses on mobile vertical platforms, like scissor lifts and vertical personnel platforms. These platforms can be driven while they are elevated, making them versatile for both indoor and outdoor use. If your job involves moving up and down in a vertical line while being able to reposition the platform, this is the course for you.
3b course
For operating mobile boom lifts, often called cherry pickers, this course is ideal. These lifts have an extendable arm that can move in various directions and can also be driven while elevated. They are suitable for a range of tasks, from construction to maintenance. If your work requires such flexibility and mobility, this course will provide you with the necessary training.
Specialist machines (SPECIAL) course
If you're working with AWPs that are unique or highly specialized for specific tasks or industries, the SPECIAL module is designed for you. This training will focus on the unique operational aspects and safety considerations of these non-standard platforms, ensuring you're equipped to handle them safely and effectively.
Push around vehicle (PAV) course
If your work involves manually-operated vertical lifts, known as Push Around Verticals (PAVs), the PAV module is tailored for you. These platforms are typically small and lightweight, used for indoor tasks like installation or maintenance in confined spaces. The training will teach you about manual handling, maneuvering safely, maintaining stability, and understanding the risks associated with these types of lifts.
Insulated aerial device (IAD) course
For work near electrical hazards, such as in utility and electrical maintenance, the IAD training is crucial. If you're operating insulated aerial devices, this training will emphasize how to recognize and handle electrical hazards, understand the safety features and operational capabilities of insulated platforms, and safely work near electrical power lines or equipment.
